Victoria Police HQ moving to super complex

VICTORIA Police will move out of its St Kilda Rd headquarters by 2015 into a new super complex at the former Australia Post mail centre in Spencer St.

Acting Chef Commissioner Tim Cartwright today said the $230 million City West complex would have better security and cutting edge technology when it opened in three years.

Acting Premier and Minister for Police Peter Ryan said the project would be a “purpose-built facility” leased by Victoria Police for 20 years.

“We are going to build a new state-of-the-art police complex…It will be a magnificent facility,” he said.

Mr Cartwright said the facility would house 1600 police and administrative staff, including the city’s Crime Department, Intelligence and Covert Support Department, and the Melbourne West Police station.

“We’re taking our crime department people, our intelligence department people out of St Kilda Rd, out of the site in Flinders St and a lot of resources we have here up to City West,” he said.

“We can’t fit all the people we’ve got for much longer.

“This is an ideal location for us…2015 can’t come soon enough for us.”

Mr Cartwright said the complex would provide a central policing location with quicker access to the City’s west and freeways.

The police station based on the ground level of the existing St Kilda Rd complex will be moved to another location nearby when the City West complex opens.

The State Government is putting $68 million into the development, while CBUS property consortia is funding $162 million to build the complex.
